Managing Applied Research in Technology Certificate

Certificate Overview

This certificate provides engineering managers with the tools to effectively and efficiently manage applied research methods in areas such as sustaining engineering, customer and supplier evaluation, quality improvement and problem solving, new process and facility start-up, the design of complex and interdependent systems and cost reduction analysis.

Methods for quality improvement include advanced experimental design, sample sizes, use of powerful parametric and non-parametric analyses, and data mining.

Curriculum – 12 credit hours

EMEN 5042: Methods for Quality Improvement
An in-depth investigation of the concepts, tools, and techniques used in quality control including statistics and probability, and management systems.

EMEN 5900: Research Methods
Develops basic quantitative and qualitative applied research methods and also includes completing a research design.

EMEN 5610: Advanced Statistical Methods for Engineering Research
Covers discrete and continuous probability laws, random variables; expectations; laws of large numbers and central limit theorem; estimation, testing hypothesis, and more.

EMEN 5620: Data Mining & Screening Experiments for Engineering Research
Combines statistical methods with applied research methods. The statistical models are implemented and interpreted in the context of actual data sets using available statistical software.
